Business & Communication Studies

 

Course Content 

Today's ever-changing global business world presents fascinating opportunities for learning. This course will encourage students to use an enquiring, critical and thoughtful approach to the study of business, to understand that business behaviour can be studied from a range of perspectives and to challenge assumptions.

The Edexcel A level Business course is structured into four core themes and consists of three externally examined papers. Students will be introduced to business in Themes 1 (Marketing and People) and Theme 2 (Managing Business Activities) through building knowledge of core business concepts and applying them to business contexts to develop a broad understanding of how businesses work.  Breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding, with applications to a wider range of contexts and more complex business information, are developed in Themes 3 (Business Decisions and Strategy) and Theme 4 (Global Business), requiring students to take a more strategic view of business opportunities and issues. The qualification will introduce students to international business, equipping them either to work in or to manage a business in an international context.

A variety of assessment techniques will be used including: data response case study quantitative and qualitative questions and extended open response questions. Students are encouraged to take part in the Young Enterprise scheme through which they will create and manage their own business, gaining valuable practical experience, working in a team competing with students from other local schools.

In today's society, most careers require an understanding of the principles of business; therefore, this course will prepare students, whatever their career choice. There are numerous University degrees related to business studies, often combining them with other subjects. This course and subsequent study could lead to a vast array of career choice, including business management, marketing, advertising, media, financial management, accounting, business law, human resource management, banking, retailing and many others. Following University, many International businesses offer graduate training schemes such as the degree apprenticeship schemes, which are growing in popularity, which provide an excellent start to a business career.
