International Women in Engineering

On the 23rd June our Science A level girls attended a ‘International Women in Engineering’ day at QinetiQ in Fort Halstead near Sevenoaks.

The programme of the day was as follows

  • Introduction including discussion about “What is an Engineer/Scientist?” – to try and dispel the idea that engineers are car mechanics!
  • Remote Operated Vehicles. The girls were shown how remote operated vehicles are used for bomb disposal activities. This included looking at mechanical design, system design and assessment. They were then given the opportunity to operate a small (ROV) and perform certain tasks.
  • There was a discussion on how bombs can be disposed of manually and a couple of our girls were kitted out with a bomb disposal suit.
  • Finally a section on Software Engineering  and how software is used, including computational fluid dynamics and how it is applied in the explosives/weapons field.

It was a great day and our thanks go to the staff at QinetiQ.
