Developing a Global Perspective

Kent College Pembury is a school which ensures that every student, whether they are aged 3 or 18, will succeed above and beyond their potential. Whatever a student’s strengths, the environment and opportunities at Kent College provide the perfect setting to stretch, challenge and champion them to thrive in a world that is ever-changing and increasingly global in its outlook. With that in mind students are encouraged to look beyond their own cultural “bubble” and consider what impact they can make in the world beyond home and school. To become resilient and confident but also adaptable, open-minded and have a broad world view.

This global outlook in many ways goes back to the school’s roots as a Methodist school. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism is quoted as saying “the world is my parish” and emphasised the importance of social responsibility and service. This sense of community and care has always underpinned the character of Kent College. From the earliest years in the Prep School, students learn to empathise with others, as well as valuing their world and thinking about what they can do to make a positive impact. In the Sixth Form, the Honours Programme requires students to contribute to the wider community, through work experience and volunteering.

A new timetable approach in the Senior School will provide extra teaching time for core subjects such as Maths, the sciences and English, but will also embed the unique Global Citizenship Diploma in KS3. Alongside developing key, future-focused skills, including problem solving, communication, collaboration and empathy, students will be encouraged to identify the links between different subjects, giving their learning new relevance, interest and purpose. For instance, in a traditional curriculum, a topic such as migration might only have been studied through a single academic “lens”, such as geography, leaving the historical, literary or artistic viewpoint disconnected or even unexplored; this risks making content seem less relevant and without real meaning. The new curriculum gives students the chance to look at key issues from a range of academic perspectives, with separate subjects coordinating their content to give students a broad, balanced and genuinely richer understanding of the issues that really matter today.

All students at Kent College experience an exciting and engaging curriculum that inspires them to become kind, compassionate and most importantly intellectually critical global citizens, ready for whatever the future might bring.
